    The Return – (Chapter: Three)

“Abby, I’ll be at the coffee shop. Page me if you need me.” Kerry said and left the ER with the blond in tow, not even waiting for a reply.

“Hey, wasn’t that … ?” Abby asked Luka as he came up behind her.

    “Yes.”

“Is she back?” Abby had mixed feelings on the subject. Legaspi seemed like a good psychiatrist, but Abby associated her with one her mother’s many bipolar cycles and would prefer not to have that reminder on a daily basis.

“I’m not sure why she’s here,” Luka said filing a chart in the rack.

    “Were they … ?”

But Luka just smiled, pulled another chart, and headed for exam three.

“Who is she,” Sam asked after Luka left.

“She used to be in psych. As an attending,” Abby added catching the rise of Sam’s eyebrow.

“Ah. Luka seemed to be happy to see her.”

Abby laughed a little picking up her charts.

“Don’t worry Sam. Luka’s not her type.”

As they settled into a booth at the coffee shop Kerry couldn’t help but notice the feeling of déjà vu. This was the same booth she had sat in during that first conversation with her mother. She was also struck by the memory of that night that she and Kim had sat across from one another in the booth at Doc Magoo’s. That was the night she had asked Kim to stay, the night she had told Kim that she had realized that she wanted more than friendship. So much had changed since that night.

“So …” Kerry wasn’t sure where to begin.

“I heard about Robert. Can’t say that I was sad.”

“Elizabeth Corday actually asked me to say something at the memorial. What was I going to say? ‘Great surgeon, but the biggest ***** ever.’”

Kerry was going to say more but the waitress arrived.

“Hi there. What can I get for you today?”

    “Just coffee,” Kerry replied.

“Yeah, same here.” Kim was hungry, but her stomach was in knots and she wasn’t sure how long any food would stay with her. She stared at her hands, unsure if this visit had been such a good idea.
